1. A method of forming an orthodontic treatment plan, comprising:
receiving, in a processor, a digital model of a dental arch, wherein the digital model is segmented to provide a basis to assign anatomical identifiers to teeth of the digital model of the dental arch;
detecting that at least one tooth is missing or ectopic in the dental arch by determining that a gap between adjacent teeth of the digital model of the dental arch exceeds a gap threshold;
determining whether the at least one tooth of the dental arch is ectopic by performing an ectopic analysis of a region of the digital model of the dental arch above or below the gap;
assigning the anatomical identifiers to the teeth of the digital model of the dental arch to account for the at least one tooth that is missing or ectopic; and
creating the orthodontic treatment plan to reposition one or more teeth of the dental arch using the assigned anatomical identifiers of the teeth of the digital model of the dental arch.
