1. A method, comprising:
sensing a sound pressure signal using a microphone placed inside an ear canal of a user of a hearing device;
transforming the sound pressure signal to obtain a frequency response;
detecting a local minimum of the frequency response above a programmable frequency level;
calculating a smoothness metric of the frequency response in a selected frequency band surrounding the local minimum;
automatically applying acoustic correction to the frequency response in the selected frequency band using an estimated transfer function to obtain a corrected sound pressure frequency response; and
using the corrected sound pressure frequency response to modify an operational characteristic of the hearing device, or to make a recommendation for a modification of a physical or operational characteristic of the hearing device.
