8. An automated method comprising:
monitoring bandwidth usage of a data communication link between a content system and a playback device, wherein the data communication link has an available bandwidth;
determining a current bandwidth demand for playback of recorded content on the data communication link;
reserving a first portion of the available bandwidth for the current bandwidth demand; and
allocating a remaining portion of the available bandwidth for distribution of live video on the data communication link.
