An airbag tether separation system, comprising an airbag tether separator including an explosive and a housing having a front wall with a plurality of grooves formed therein, the tether separator being structured so that, when the explosive is activated, the explosive produces shockwaves causing separation of a portion of a tether extending between the explosive and the front wall, at least a portion of the shockwaves also passing into and rupturing at least one groove of the plurality of grooves.
