1. A hair styling device, comprising:
a two-dimensional array of elements to heat hair, wherein the elements are opposed to each other and are configured to produce optical radiation energy;
sensors to obtain an areal light density profile of a treatment area within a gap between the two-dimensional array of elements;
and a control unit for controlling each of the elements of the two-dimensional array of elements individually in dependence of a sensed hair density measurement such that intensity of the optical radiation energy output is adjusted based on output from the control unit.
