1. An electronic device comprising:
a display assembly comprising:
an external display surface;
a light-emitting component operative to emit light for illuminating the external display surface;
a light-sensing component operative to detect light passing through the external display surface, wherein an element of the light-emitting component and an element of the light-sensing component lie in a single layer extending along and underneath the external display surface; and
a mask operative to block at least a portion of any light emitted by the light-emitting component from being detected by the light-sensing component.
