1. A decorative object with a multicolored surface, the decorative object comprising:

a substrate; and

a layer on the substrate,

wherein the layer comprises a first portion and a second portion of different colors with respect to one another,

wherein a surface of each of the first portion and the second portion comprises lanthanum boride, and

wherein the surface of the first portion comprises a LaB_ywhere y is between 9 and 12, and the surface of the second portion comprises a LaB_xwhere x is between 9 and 12 and is different from y.
