1. A method for forming a porous medium, comprising:
combining some or all of the following two components:
(a) a first solution comprising water and optionally substituted m-phenylenediamine, wherein the optionally substituted m-phenylenediamine is present in the first solution in an amount of greater than or equal to 0.005% w/v and less than or equal to 0.500% w/v; and
(b) a second solution comprising a nonpolar organic liquid and optionally substituted trimesoyl chloride, wherein the optionally substituted trimesoyl chloride is present in the second solution in an amount of greater than 0.004% w/v and less than or equal to 0.500% w/v;
wherein some or all of the optionally substituted m-phenylenediamine and some or all of the optionally substituted trimesoyl chloride undergo a polymerization reaction to form a polymer layer;
wherein the first solution and/or the second solution comprises a polar liquid co-solvent other than water present in an amount of greater than or equal to 0.100% w/v and less than or equal to 10% w/v.
