mixing at least one of barium-magnesium alumino-silicate, SiO2, and colloidal silica with silicon oxycarbide in a carrier fluid to form a slurry;
drying the slurry to remove the carrier fluid; and
curing the slurry such that cross-linking occurs in the composite material,
wherein the mixing includes mixing barium-magnesium alumino-silicate, SiO2, and silicon oxycarbide.
