1. A method of generating a full-field optical signal for a coherent optical communications network, comprising the steps of:
outputting a first coherent laser signal from a first laser;
implementing amplitude modulation on the first coherent laser signal to generate a first amplitude-modulated coherent optical signal;
applying phase modulation to the first amplitude-modulated coherent optical signal, wherein the phase modulation is orthogonal to the amplitude modulation; and
generating the full-field optical signal from a result of applying the phase modulation to the first amplitude-modulated coherent optical signal.
