1. A system comprising:
a processing device, and
a memory device configured to store a computer program having instructions that, when executed, enable the processing device to
receive information regarding a path through a network from a source node via one or more intermediate nodes to a destination node, the path is defined in the information as a home route through the network using one or more network resources with the home route including the source node, the destination node, and the one or more intermediate nodes, and
utilize the information regarding the path to automatically compute an alternate home route for the home route, wherein the alternate home route is computed from the source node to the destination node while attempting to retain as many of the one or more intermediate nodes of the path as possible and wherein the alternate home route is utilized to protect the home route in response to a fault while retaining as much of the home route as possible.
