1. A method of using a self-describing module for updating data in a medical monitoring device, the method comprising:
receiving a metadata block (MDB) from the self-describing module by the medical monitoring device via a communication interface, the MDB including at least identification (ID) data and corresponding configuration data, and information about data that is acquired from at least one physiological sensor;
associating the ID data from the MDB with ID data of a plurality of sub-systems of the medical monitoring device; and
updating configuration data of at least one sub-system of the medical monitoring device with the configuration data in the MDB based on a result of the association between ID data from the MDB and the ID data of the plurality of sub-systems.
