1. A computer implemented method of identifying an insect specimen with software storing instructions implementing computerized steps, comprising:
gathering a plurality of digital images for each of a plurality of insect specimens, wherein each respective plurality of digital images corresponding with an insect specimen is obtained at a plurality of image orientations relative to a common axis;
segmenting each respective plurality of digital images into body pixels and image background pixels by detecting edges of the body pixels;
extracting features of each insect specimen from the respective plurality of digital images by calculating variance of pixel intensity across the respective plurality of digital images;
clustering the digital images according to the features;
classifying the insect specimens by species according to respective clusters.
