1. A computer-implemented method comprising:
receiving, by a payment service system of a payment service, a request to split a bill between two or more peer users, the request comprising information identifying at least the two or more peer users among whom the bill is to be split and an amount of the bill to be split, wherein the two or more peer users are identified based at least in part on determining a presence of two or more mobile devices that are respectively associated with the two or more peer users using signals emitted from the two or more mobile devices;
upon receiving the request to split the bill between the two or more peer users, sending, by the payment service system, a payment request to each mobile device associated with a user of the two or more peer users, wherein the payment request causes a payment application executing on the mobile device of the user to prompt the user to perform an action with respect to the payment request;
receiving, by the payment service system, a response from the two or more mobile devices of the two or more peer users, wherein each response indicates the respective user's approval of a specified amount for payment of a portion of the bill associated with the user; and
causing, by the payment service system, a funds transfer based on specified amounts approved by the two or more peer users.
