Process for the preparation of formaldehyde, said process comprising electrochemically reducing CO to form formaldehyde, wherein said electrochemically reducing CO is carried out in a supporting electrolyte comprising a non-aqueous solvent and comprising less than 50% water, based on the total weight of the solvent present in the supporting electrolyte, wherein the non-aqueous solvent comprises an alcohol.
