1. Image processing apparatus comprising processing circuitry configured to:
obtain a display image to be displayed on a display unit in accordance with motion of a viewpoint of a driver, on a basis of a captured image obtained by capturing an image on a rear side from a vehicle, when a line-of-sight of the driver is in a certain region including the display unit,
superimpose an image showing the vehicle on the captured image to obtain the display image;
register, as a reference viewpoint position, a viewpoint position of the driver in a case where the line-of-sight of the driver is continuously present on the display unit for a period, longer than a first time;
not to register, as the reference viewpoint position, the viewpoint position of the driver in a case where the line-of-sight of the driver is continuously present on the display unit for a period shorter than the first time on the display unit;
change a positional relationship between the superimposed image showing the vehicle on the captured image in accordance with a deviation of the viewpoint position of the driver from the reference viewpoint position; and
update the reference viewpoint position on a basis of a fluctuation of the viewpoint position over a fixed interval unless a line-of-sight of the driver is in the certain region.
