1. An additive manufacturing system comprising:
an energy source configured to direct an energy beam toward a component to form a melt pool; and
a material delivery device comprising:
a feed actuator configured to feed a wire toward the melt pool; and
control circuitry comprising a discharge circuit configured to discharge, in response to a control signal indicating disengagement of the wire, a current to the wire to disengage the wire from the melt pool, wherein a strength of the current is sufficiently large to increase the temperature of at least a portion of the wire above a melting point of the wire to separate a proximal portion of the wire from the melt pool.
