1. An implantable medical device system supporting configuration by a primary care physician, comprising:
the implantable medical device;
a data store configured to receive and store a plurality of inactive technical parameter sets for use with the implantable medical device;
wherein the implantable medical device provides a plurality of functions accessible over a communication link, including a function comprising parameter set activation;
the parameter set activation comprising activation of least one of the plurality of inactive technical parameter sets to change device-domain parameters controlling therapeutic operation of the device;
a plurality of access keys, each recognizable to obtain access to a respective at least one of the plurality of functions; and
a selection interface for selecting from among the inactive technical parameter sets and activating at least one of them via the parameter set activation function;
wherein the implanted medical device provides communication link access to the function allowing parameter set activation based on recognition of one of the plurality of access keys, validated through the implanted medical device; and the access is allowed based on which access key of the plurality of access keys is recognized.
