1. A system for controlling the breathing of a patient comprising:
a respiratory conduit having a first end coupled to a patient interface device, a second opposing end coupled to a pressurized air supply device and a cavity defined there between;
an opening in said cavity between said first and second ends; and
a control device containing a controlled interior volume therein positioned adjacent said opening in the cavity of said respiratory conduit, said controlled volume being outside said respiratory conduit and in fluid communication with an airflow within said cavity via said opening,
wherein a controlled amount of a patient's exhaled breath and said airflow pass through said opening into said controlled volume,
wherein said control device operates to regulate the release of a controlled amount of a patient's exhaled carbon dioxide.
