1. A display system comprising:
a display to emit or transmit light; and
an optical subsystem, optically coupled to the display, and configured to provide a single continuous aperture that has a plurality of polarization-dependent segments at different locations across a field of view of a viewer, such that a left eye of the viewer and a right eye of the viewer each see a different plurality of virtual images at different depths to produce a stereoscopic and monocular image in a continuous viewable spatial region for both eyes.
