1. A calibration apparatus comprising:
estimation circuitry comprising an optical microscope and an image capturing device configured to capture a brightfield image of a dyed biological sample using the optical microscope, the estimation circuitry configured to estimate, based on a calibration factor, an estimated number of cells of a first type in the dyed biological sample containing an unknown number of cells by counting the cells in the brightfield image;
determination circuitry comprising a fluorescence microscope and an image capturing device configured to capture a fluorescence image of the dyed biological sample using the fluorescence microscope, the determination circuitry configured to determine an actual number of cells of the first type in the dyed biological sample by counting the cells present in the fluorescence image; and
processing circuitry configured to adjust the calibration factor until the estimation circuitry and the determination circuitry both produce results for the estimated number of cells of the first type that approach one another, wherein the processing circuitry comprises a machine learning model trained using pairs of brightfield images and fluorescence images that have estimated numbers of cells that approach each other, and
wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to use the calibration factor to estimate, from brightfield images of additional dyed biological samples without use of the fluorescence microscope, estimated numbers of cells of the first type in the additional dyed biological samples.
