An engineered polypeptide having transaminase activity, wherein said engineered polypeptide comprises an amino acid sequence having at least 90% sequence identity to the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 2 and one or more residue differences as compared to SEQ ID NO:2 at residue positions selected from: X19, X34, X53, X73, X88, X107, X155, X165, X171, X178, X251, X259, X268, X277, X286, X312, X358, X366, X383, X399, X414, X426, and X450.
