1. A system for adjusting a negative pressure used to withdraw fluid from a cavity of a patient, the system comprising:
a pump configured to provide the negative pressure as at least one of a plurality of negative pressures to a fluid line connected to the cavity, the plurality of negative pressures including a nominal drain pressure and an initial negative pressure, the initial negative pressure being less in magnitude than the nominal drain pressure;
a controller configured to measure and control the at least one of the plurality of negative pressures provided by the pump;
the controller also configured to measure a flow rate of the fluid from the fluid line to the pump;
wherein the controller is arranged to perform a flow check before the withdrawing the fluid from the cavity of the patient at the nominal drain pressure, the flow check comprising controlling the pump to provide the initial negative pressure and measuring the flow rate for a preset period of time, the controller configured to control the pump to provide the nominal drain pressure when the measured flow rate during the flow check exceeds a preset threshold.
