1. A system comprising:
a grow module that includes:
a growing tray;
a membrane;
a top cover through which oxygen reaches plant roots of a plurality of plants, wherein the top cover comprises a non-transparent material, wherein edges of the membrane create a light blocking seal on edges of the top cover, and wherein the top cover forms vertical shaft openings of a thickness that prevent light from reaching the membrane but through which oxygen reaches the plant roots;
a separator that contacts the membrane at one or more outer edges of the membrane, separating the top cover and the membrane causing fresh air to contact a layer of water that covers the plant roots; and
wherein the growing tray allows a flow of a nutrient water supply
wherein the plant roots are prevented from growing down into the flow of the nutrient water supply.
