1. An appliance comprising:
a cabinet;
an external communication port positioned on the cabinet;
a wireless communication module in wireless communication with a remote server through an external network; and
a controller comprising a boot loader segment and being in operative communication with the external communication port and the wireless communication module, the controller being configured to:
detect port activity at the external communication port, the port activity being associated with a request to access the boot loader segment of the controller;
transmit a notification of the request to the remote server using the wireless communication module;
receive an access determination from the remote server; and
regulate access to the boot loader segment through the external communication port based at least in part on the access determination.
