1. A vehicle-mounted sensor system for determining a state of at least one mechanical vehicle component and/or a body structure of the vehicle, comprising:
at least one sensor for continuously capturing sensor data corresponding to a mechanical variable of the mechanical vehicle component in any operating state of the vehicle, a computing unit for performing a reduction of a data volume of the sensor data to be transmitted to an external computer, and a data memory for caching the sensor data;
wherein at least one sensor provides the sensor data to be transmitted to the computing unit at a specifiable sampling rate;
wherein the reduction is performed by:
checking an existence of an event relevant to determining a state of the mechanical vehicle component within a portion of the sensor data that is related to a relevant time window; and
when a threshold value is exceeded and the event is detected: transmitting the portion to the external computer, and when the event is not detected within the relevant time window, transmitting to the external computer null data as a short piece of information together with a timestamp corresponding to the relevant time window;
wherein the null data having a reduced data size compared to the captured sensor data and is generated for the relevant time window.
