1. A method for determining metal ions in a sample, the method comprising:
complexing an organoselenium compound with a metal ion in the sample to obtain a complex; and
extracting the complex in a volume of an alcohol;
wherein the organoselenium compound has the formula I:

wherein each X is the same and is hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, cyano, —NO2, C1-C6 alkyl, or C1-C6 alkoxy.
