1. A method of removing heavy hydrocarbons from a fluid volume, the method comprising:
causing the fluid volume to contact porous adsorbent particles, the porous adsorbent particles comprising SiO2, wherein a relative micropore surface area (RMA) of the porous adsorbent particles is greater than 10%, and wherein a micropore surface area of the porous adsorbent particles is greater than 40 m2/g.
