1. A head mountable display system configured to project light to an eye of a user to display augmented reality image content in a vision field of the user, the display system comprising:
at least one light source configured to output light;
at least one spatial light modulator arranged to receive at least a portion of the light from the at least one light source and modulate the received light to output modulated light that conveys the augmented reality image content; and
an eyepiece configured to direct, toward the eye of the user, the modulated light that is output by the at least one spatial light modulator, the eyepiece comprising:
a first plurality of waveguides;
a first plurality of in-coupling optical elements on or in the first plurality of waveguides, the first in-coupling optical elements configured to in-couple the modulated light that is output by the at least one spatial light modulator into the first plurality of waveguides to be guided within the first plurality of waveguides; and
a first plurality of out-coupling optical elements on or in the first plurality of waveguides, the first plurality of out-coupling optical elements configured to out-couple light being guided within the first plurality of waveguides out of the first plurality of waveguides toward the eye of the user;
a second plurality of waveguides;
a second plurality of in-coupling optical elements on or in the second plurality of waveguides, the second in-coupling optical elements configured to in-couple the modulated light that is output by the at least one spatial light modulator into the second plurality of waveguides to be guided within the second plurality of waveguides; and
a second plurality of out-coupling optical elements on or in the second plurality of waveguides, the second plurality of out-coupling optical elements configured to out-couple light being guided within the second plurality of waveguides out of the second plurality of waveguides toward the eye of the user;
wherein the at least one spatial light modulator is configured to move to direct, at a first time, a first portion of the modulated light to the first in-coupling optical elements that are on or in the first plurality of waveguides, and to direct, at a second time, a second portion of the modulated light to the second in-coupling optical elements that are on or in the second plurality of waveguides,
wherein the at least one light source is on an opposite side of the eyepiece from the at least one spatial light modulator, and
wherein the at least one light source is arranged to output the light such that the light propagates to the at least one spatial light modulator through a portion of the eyepiece that is between the first plurality of in-coupling optical elements and the second plurality of in-coupling optical elements.
