1. A method for performing an assays on a biological sample, comprising:
inserting a first test cartridge or second test cartridge into a cartridge port of an analyzer and inserting a second test cartridge into a second cartridge port of the analyzer,
wherein the first test cartridge comprises a light emitter connected to a first contact and a light detector connected to a second contact; and the second test cartridge comprises an amperometric electrode connected to a third contact and a reference electrode connected to a fourth contact,
wherein the analyzer comprises:
the cartridge port that mates with the first test cartridge and the second test cartridge, a multi-terminal connector, one or more processors, memory coupled to the processor, universal channel circuitry comprising a first channel, a second channel, and a third channel, and
a non-transitory computer-readable memory storing a plurality of instructions executable by the one or more processors, the plurality of instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:
when the first test cartridge is inserted, receive from the first test cartridge an operating state signal indicative of the first test cartridge;
assign the first channel to the light emitter via the first contact and a corresponding first pin;
assign the second channel to the light detector via the second contact and a corresponding second pin;
switch one or more switches of circuitry of the first channel to a current driver mode;
switch one or more switches of circuitry of the second channel to a current measurement mode;
perform an optical analytical test using the first channel and the second channel; or
when the second test cartridge is inserted, receive from the second test cartridge an operating state signal indicative of the second cartridge;
assign the first channel to the amperometric electrode via the third contact and corresponding third pin;
assign the second channel to the reference electrode via the fourth contact and corresponding fourth pin;
switch the one or more switches of the circuitry of the first channel to an amperometric measurement mode;
switch the one or more switches of the circuitry of the second channel to a reference measurement mode; and
perform an electrochemical analytical test using the first channel and the second channel.
