1. A computer-implemented method at a client computer system in an autonomous vehicle, the client computer system comprising an automated driving system, the client computer system arranged to receive and store high definition (HD) map data representing a road system having a plurality of objects, the HD map data comprising a plurality of map features representing the plurality of objects of the road system, the method comprising:
receiving map change data including one or more change instructions, each change instruction identifying one or more respective changes to be made in one or more map features of the plurality of map features of the HD map data, the map change data being received independently from receiving the HD map data;
processing the map change data to identify updated map features from among one or more map features associated with a specified portion of the road system; and
based on the updated map features, generating an updated HD map data for the specified portion of the road system; and
using, by the automated driving system, the updated HD map data for controlling one or more operations for maneuvering the autonomous vehicle.
