an annular form factor comprising a rigid housing sized to circumferentially surround a user's head when the light emitting unit is worn;
a flexible band structure that is configured to be stretched or elongated to apply a bias or inwardly directed pressure to retain the light emitting unit in position during use, wherein the flexible band spans across a receiving aperture formed by the rigid housing, and wherein the receiving aperture formed by the rigid housing is sized to receive a portion of a hardhat or other headgear worn by the user; and
a plurality of lighting elements arranged to generate at least a partial halo of light including in a forward region in front of the user's head and in a rearward region behind the user's head when the light emitting unit is worn and the plurality of lighting elements are illuminated.
