1. A method for removing microorganisms from a system comprising:
contacting a surface in the system with a peroxyformic acid composition comprising at least about 75 ppm peroxyformic acid, wherein the composition is dosed on site and generated in situ; and
removing biofilm and microbial growth from the surface,
wherein the system is a petroleum production and/or oil recovery system, refining system, geothermal well, boiler, power generation system, mineral washing system, flotation and benefaction system, paper mill digester and washer, bleach plant system, white water system, mill water system, black liquor evaporator, air washer, continuous casting system, air conditioning system, refrigeration system, pasteurization system, water reclamation system, purification system, membrane filtration system, food processing system, and/or waste treatment system.
