1. A method of making an ion exchange membrane material, comprising:
providing a reaction medium including diphenylalkylene and styrene;
copolymerizing a polymer backbone from the diphenylalkylene and styrene; and
reacting the polymer backbone to functionalize phenyl groups on the polymer backbone with a plurality of ionic functional groups.
