1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:
receiving an indication that a first node will be taken offline, wherein a first logical unit number (LUN) having a preferred communication path extends through the first node;
causing communication paths extending through the first node to be blocked;
causing communication paths extending through a second node to be promoted;
in response to determining that existing input/output (I/O) operations previously assigned to the first node have been completed, causing the first node to go offline;
sending I/O operations to the first LUN through the second node while the first node is offline;
in response to the first node coming back online, causing a notification to be sent to a host regarding a second LUN having a preferred communication path that extends through the second node;
causing communication paths extending through the second node to be blocked;
causing communication paths extending through the first node to be promoted; and
in response to determining that existing I/O operations previously assigned to the second node have been completed, causing the second node to go offline.
