1. A computer-implemented method for accessing a media title for playback, the method comprising:
receiving from a client device a first request for a first range of data included in a first encoded version of the media title;
determining, based on a first file extent index, a plurality of files across which the first encoded version of the media title is stored and from which the first range of data is to be accessed, wherein the first file extent index maps an identifier for the first encoded version of the media title to an identifier for each file included in the plurality of files, and wherein the first file extent index maps each identifier for each file to a given range of data that is stored in the file;
retrieving the first range of data from the plurality of files; and
transmitting the first range of data to the client device in a response to the first request.
