1. A method of estimating a distance of an object from a LIDAR system, performed by the LiDAR system, the method comprising:
determining a coarse estimate of the distance of the object from the LiDAR system;
refining the coarse estimate of the distance by determining a fast search estimate of the distance of the object from the LiDAR system using a search operation; and
performing one or more iterations of the search operation,
wherein the fast search estimate is within a precision threshold, the precision threshold is adjustable at least in part based on the coarse estimate, and wherein the number of iterations is at least in part based on the precision threshold.
