1. A method of reacting an activated aluminum, the method comprising:
exposing the activated aluminum to an aqueous solution, wherein the activated aluminum comprises aluminum combined with gallium and/or indium;
reacting the aluminum in the activated aluminum with water in the aqueous solution to generate hydrogen and aluminum ions; and
maintaining the aluminum ions dissolved in the aqueous solution during the reaction.
