1. An air treatment device for purging unwanted substances from air, the air treatment device comprising:
a treatment passageway having an upstream end for admitting the air which is to be treated and a downstream end for discharging the air which has been treated;
a side passageway communicating with the treatment passageway intermediate the upstream end of the treatment passageway and the downstream end of the treatment passageway;
a non-thermal plasma reactor stage disposed in the side passageway, wherein the non-thermal plasma reactor stage comprises a plurality of non-thermal plasma reactor units, wherein each of the plurality of non-thermal plasma reactor units comprises a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) construction comprising a first electrode and a second electrode, wherein each of the plurality of non-thermal plasma reactor units is configured to generate a plasma between the first electrode and the second electrode, whereby when the air which is to be treated passes through the plasma, air byproducts comprising O3 and CO are generated; and
a catalyst stage disposed within the treatment passageway downstream of the non-thermal plasma reactor stage, wherein the catalyst stage comprises (i) MnO2 for converting the O3 generated by the plasma into O2 and (ii) CuO for converting the CO generated by the plasma into CO2.
