1. A method comprising:
converging, using a focus optic, an electromagnetic radiation (EMR) beam to a focal region located along an optical axis;
detecting, using an optical detector, a width of a signal radiation emanating from an interaction of the EMR beam and a surface of a window intersecting the optical axis, wherein the width of the signal radiation represents a transverse width of the EMR beam incident at the surface of the window;
determining, using a controller, a reference position along the optical axis based on a position of the focal region corresponding to a minimum width of the EMR beam incident at a surface of the window,
a portion of the focal region being substantially coincident with the surface of the window within a tolerance no greater than 30 micrometers; and
translating the focal region to a treatment position, wherein the treatment position is at a predetermined distance from the reference position.
