a substrate having a first asphalt coating on a top surface of the substrate and a bottom surface of the substrate;
a surface layer of granules embedded in the first asphalt coating on the top surface of the substrate;
a backdust layer of particles embedded in the first asphalt coating on the bottom surface of the substrate;
a sealant layer comprising a top surface and a bottom surface, wherein the top surface of the sealant layer abuts the backdust layer; and
a hydrophobic coating disposed on the bottom surface of the sealant layer, wherein the hydrophobic coating comprises a silicone,
wherein the hydrophobic coating is disposed on the backdust layer and the sealant layer around a perimeter of the shingle,
wherein the hydrophobic coating extends a distance between about 0.5 inches and about 3 inches from each edge of a lower surface of the shingle.
