1. A method of sparging bubbles into a liquid comprising:
sparging gas into a reactor containing a liquid via a plurality of spargers positioned within the reactor and capable of creating bubbles;
directing a flow of the liquid across an exterior surface of the spargers via a plurality of annular shrouds within the reactor and surrounding the plurality of spargers; and
shearing the bubbles at a surface of the spargers via the flow of the liquid across the exterior surface of the spargers;
wherein the method is operated in a downflow mode.
