1. A compound having excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) character, said compound being at least one selected from the group consisting of:

wherein for compounds (i) to (vii) R and/or R1 and/or R2 may each be at least one substituent or moiety located at one or more of an ortho, meta and/or para position on the benzene ring and may be selected from the group consisting of: hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, cycloalkynyl, aryl, heteroaryl, heteroalicyclyl, aralkyl, heteroaralkyl, (heteroalicyclyl)alkyl, hydroxy, protected hydroxyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, acyl, mercapto, thioalkyl, arylthio, cyano, halogen, thiocarbonyl, O-carbamyl, N-carbamyl, O-thiocarbamyl, N-thiocarbamyl, C-amido, N-amido, S-sulfonamido, N-sulfonamido, C-carboxy, protected C-carboxy, O-carboxy, isocyanato, thiocyanato, isothiocyanato, nitro, nitrile, silyl, sulfenyl, sulfinyl, sulfonyl, haloalkyl, haloalkoxy, trihalomethanesulfonyl, trihalomethanesulfonamido, an amino, a mono-substituted amino, a di-substituted amino group, esters, alcohol, acetates, and protected derivatives of any one of the aforementioned.
