1. A method for calculating conduction velocity of a cardiac activation wavefront, comprising:
driving, with current pulses, a mapping catheter having at least one electrode;
sensing a plurality of electrophysiological (“EP”) data points using the mapping catheter driven due to the current pulses, each EP data point of the plurality of EP data points comprising a recording location and a voltage value measured at the recording location;
generating a three-dimensional model of a heart of a patient using the received plurality of EP data points;
selecting, for each EP data point of the plurality of EP data points, a set of neighboring EP data points from the plurality of EP data points based on proximity of the recording location;
defining a surface on the generated three-dimensional model of the heart such that each EP data point of the plurality of EP data points and the corresponding set of neighboring EP data points all lie on said surface;
defining a local activation time (LAT) for each EP data point of the plurality of EP data points as a function f(x,y) on the surface, where x and y are spatial coordinates on the surface; and
computing conduction velocity at each EP data point of the plurality of EP data points as a norm function of a gradient for the function f(x,y).
