1. A computer-implemented method comprising:
placing a device associated with a user in a do not disturb mode;
receiving, while the device is in the do not disturb mode, information about an event;
monitoring the user's electronic communications, in response to receiving the information about the event;
computing a level of importance of the event based on the monitoring of the user's electronic communications, wherein the computing includes assigning a weight to each of the user's electronic communications based on a plurality of factors;
in response to the computed level of importance exceeding a threshold and a determination that the event is trending among a plurality of users that share membership in a social group with the user:
overriding the do not disturb mode; and
displaying, while the device is in the do not disturb mode, a notification about the event to the user on the device.
