1. A reverse osmosis system having a plurality of reverse osmosis membrane units, the reverse osmosis membrane units forming a chain of at least n reverse osmosis membrane units, wherein n is an integer greater than 2, each reverse osmosis membrane unit having a membrane separating a feed chamber and a permeate chamber, an inlet connected to the feed chamber, a permeate outlet connected to the permeate chamber and a concentrate outlet connected to the feed chamber, wherein the concentrate outlet of an upstream reverse osmosis membrane unit in the chain of reverse osmosis membrane units is connected to the inlet of a downstream reverse osmosis membrane unit and is also connected to a hydraulic motor which is operatively connected to a first electric machine, and wherein a first portion of the concentrate flowing from the concentrate outlet of the upstream reverse osmosis membrane unit flows to the inlet of the downstream reverse osmosis membrane unit and a second portion of the concentrate flowing from the concentrate outlet of the upstream reverse osmosis membrane unit flows to the hydraulic motor, and wherein a concentrate outlet of the downstream reverse osmosis membrane unit is connected to a second hydraulic motor.
