1. A transceiver for an optical communication network, comprising:
a processor configured to format an input data signal into an outgoing modulated data stream having a sequential series of data bursts, each data burst in the sequential series including (i) a data header portion, and (ii) a payload data portion; and
a transmitting portion configured to transmit the outgoing modulated data stream to the optical communication network for reception by a plurality of remote receiving units in communication with the optical communication network,
wherein the processor is further configured to format each data burst such that the data header portion includes a single-polarization signal data sequence enabling a remote receiving unit of the plurality of remote receiving units to equalize the data payload portion using the single-polarization signal data sequence from the corresponding data header portion.
