1. An adapter for use with trailer components of a trailer, comprising:
a power, ground, and control terminals corresponding with a socket power, ground, and control terminals of a trailer component socket of a trailer, wherein the socket power, ground, and control terminals are arranged and configured to electrically connect to power, ground, and control circuits of the trailer, and wherein the control terminals are arranged and configured to electrically connect to a Control Area Network (CAN) bus;
adapter power, ground, control, and mode selection output terminals that are arranged and configured to electrically connect to corresponding trailer component power, ground, control, and mode selection terminals of the trailer components; and
an adapter circuit electrically connected to the power, ground, and control terminals, wherein the adapter circuit is configured to provide a mode selection to the trailer component via the adapter mode selection output terminals;
wherein the trailer component includes control logic configured to accept the mode selection and control input received from the CAN bus via the adapter control terminals, and wherein the trailer component is configured to activate and deactivate according to the mode selection and the control input.
