1. A method implemented by a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), the method comprising:
receiving configuration information indicating that the WTRU is to monitor for an energy saving signal (ESS);
receiving the ESS prior to a start of a discontinuous reception (DRX) cycle;
determining whether the received ESS corresponds to a wake up signal or a go to sleep signal;
determining whether to start a DRX on duration timer for the DRX cycle, wherein the WTRU determines to start the DRX on duration timer for the DRX cycle on condition that the received ESS corresponds to the wake up signal, and the WTRU determines to refrain from starting the DRX on duration timer for the DRX cycle on condition that the ESS corresponds to the go to sleep signal; and
starting the DRX on duration timer for the DRX cycle on condition that the ESS corresponds to the wake up signal, wherein the WTRU attempts to receive one or more physical downlink control (PDCCH) transmissions while the DRX on duration timer for the DRX cycle is running.
