1. A computer-implemented method for automatically detecting cross-connected cells in a communication network, the method comprising:
obtaining first cell data of a source cell (304, 404, 508) within the communication network;
determining an effective area (302, 506) of the source cell (304, 404, 508) using the first cell data;
classifying each neighbouring cell of the source cell (304, 404, 508) into one of: a first group, a second group, based on a location of said neighbouring cell, wherein the first group includes neighbouring cells which are located inside the effective area (302, 506) of the source cell whereas the second group includes neighbouring cells which are located outside the effective area of the source cell;
calculating a share of handover events from the source cell (304, 404, 508) to the neighbouring cells in the first group using the first cell data; and
when the share of handover events from the source cell (304, 404, 508) to the neighbouring cells in the first group lies below a first threshold, filtering out at least one neighbouring cell from amongst the second group with which a number of handover events of the source cell lies above a second threshold and determining the source cell to be a cross-connected cell when:
a direction of at least one filtered cell (402, 502) is opposite to a direction of the source cell; and/or
an effective area (504) of at least one filtered cell (402, 502) does not overlap with the effective area (302, 506) of the source cell.
